Tutorial 1: Hello World API

In this tutorial, you'll create your first BurgerAPI application - a simple "Hello World" API that demonstrates the core concepts of file-based routing and automatic documentation generation.

A single API endpoint that responds to GET requests with a friendly JSON message. You'll also see how BurgerAPI automatically generates OpenAPI documentation for your API.

Step 1: Create a New Project

The easiest way to get started with BurgerAPI is to use the CLI:

# Create a new BurgerAPI project using the CLI
burger-api create my-burger-api
cd my-burger-api

This command:

  • Generates a basic project structure.
  • Sets up a TypeScript entry file.
  • Creates a burger.config.ts with sensible defaults for apiDir, pageDir, and URL prefixes.

Prefer a manual setup?

If you want to wire things up yourself instead of using the CLI, you can still:

mkdir my-burger-api
cd my-burger-api
bun init
bun add burger-api

Then follow the same index.ts and api setup from the rest of this tutorial.

Step 2: Configure Your Server

If you used burger-api create, you should already have an entry file similar to this. Open or create index.ts in your project root:

What's Happening?
  • apiDir: "api" tells BurgerAPI to look for route files in the api directory
  • debug: true enables helpful error messages during development
  • The callback function runs after the server starts successfully

Step 3: Create Your First API Route

Create an api directory in your project:

mkdir api

Now create your first route file:

Understanding File-Based Routing

The file api/hello/route.ts creates an endpoint at /api/hello. The folder structure directly maps to the URL path!

Step 4: Run Your Server

Start your BurgerAPI server:

bun run index.ts

You should see output like:

📚 API docs available at http://localhost:4000/docs

Step 5: Test Your API

Open your browser or use a tool like curl to test your endpoint:

In your browser: Visit http://localhost:4000/api/hello

Using curl:

curl http://localhost:4000/api/hello

You should see a response like:

Step 6: Explore Auto-Generated Documentation

One of BurgerAPI's best features is automatic OpenAPI documentation generation. Visit:

http://localhost:4000/docs

You'll see an interactive Swagger UI showing your API endpoint with:

  • Available HTTP methods
  • Response schema
  • Example responses
  • Try-it-out functionality
Why This Matters

BurgerAPI automatically generates this documentation from your code. As you add more endpoints and validation schemas, the documentation updates automatically!

Understanding the Code

Let's break down what we just built:

Server Configuration (index.ts)

Key Concepts
  • File-based routing: Folder structure = URL structure
  • HTTP method exports: Export functions named GET, POST, etc.

Build for Production (Optional)

Once you're happy with your Hello World API, you can build it for production using the CLI:

# From the project root
burger-api build src/index.ts

This produces a bundle under:

  • .build/bundle/app.js

If you prefer a standalone executable (great for simple deployments), run:

burger-api build:exec src/index.ts

This creates a binary under:

  • .build/executable/<project> (or .exe on Windows)

Troubleshooting

"Cannot find module 'burger-api'"

  • Make sure you ran bun add burger-api in your project directory

"Port 4000 is already in use"

  • Change the port: burger.serve(3000) instead of burger.serve(4000)

"Cannot GET /api/hello"

  • Make sure your file is named exactly route.ts (not hello.ts)
  • Check that the api directory exists
  • Restart your server after making changes

TypeScript errors

  • Make sure you're importing the type correctly: import type { BurgerRequest }
